California to Add EVEN MORE Restrictions to Ammo Starting January 1

California Ammo Law

Sadly, it shouldn’t be a surprise at this point that any gun news out of California is going to be bad news for anyone except gun-grabbers. And as we enter a new year, that’s unfortunately the case once again.

Starting January 1, 2018, Prop 63 will take effect across California. This new law will do a number of things for ammunition purchases made in the state and none of them seem to be beneficial to the people they will actually affect, but when was the last time California truly cared about its gun-owning citizens, anyway?

Some new tenants of Prop 63 that Californians will be forced to follow in the coming days include …

  • Forcing people to pass background checks every time they want to buy ammo.
  • Forcing all ammo purchases to be made face-to-face by a licensed ammunition vendor. (No more purchases allowed online unless through a licensed vendor who must deliver the ammo themselves.)
  • Ammo cannot be driven across state lines any longer.
  • If YOUR gun is stolen YOU must report it within 5 days or YOU may receive a $1,000 fine/and or jail time depending on circumstances.

And as if that’s not enough for the gun grabbers starting in 2019 vendors will be forced to electronically track ALL ammo sales and transfers in order to submit them to the Department of Justice where they will be kept in a database forever.

The last time I checked laws were supposed to help people in the U.S. but this seems like nothing more than a blanket punishment for simply owning a gun. Now I know that anti-gunners will say that these new laws keep people safe. Now while it is true that there are some bad apples in the gun owner group and they do cause pain and commit acts of violence–sometimes–mashing an entire group of people together simply because they own something is downright bigoted.

To compare it to something that a lot of anti-gunners and left-leaning political types also got up in arms about, it’s similar to the travel ban that was called racist and an affront to Democracy when the President was trying to keep out countries with high numbers of terrorist activity through his extreme vetting. This seems to be the anti-gunners version of that, except none of them have a problem with grouping and punishing an entire group for the actions of a select few.

It’s a sad state of affairs when the government seems to be working against the very people it is supposed to protect, stripping away basic human rights, verified by the founders of our country in the very document these law makers violate: The Constitution.

At the end of the day, all this does is make it more difficult for decent people. The criminals have no problem driving across state lines and buying ammunition in Arizona or one of the other bordering states and bringing it home. In other words, what we all know to be true will still be. And that is, this won’t work on the criminals, only the decent, hard-working people.

Then again, maybe that’s the point after all.

What are your thoughts on this? We’d like to hear from all of you in the comments below if you have something you want to say about this new set of regulations thrust upon the citizens of California.

As a law abiding gun owner and resident of California, this truly is a liberal move to lump a few bad apples in with larger group. It’s sad times here in CA when it comes to legally owning a gun.

I am a legal gun owner and attend to try and comply with all new laws.
I live next door to a grow house. This is the second grower that has lived there.
The last person who grew there was selling to everyone. And I cant buy ammo
over the internet?, What the hell !!. I agree with people who “actually need ” and are helped with medical marijuana. I didn’t get any vote about a grow next to me? I will still protect my family.

I want to know why this blatantly unconstitutional law hasn’t been vigorously challenged in Court yet.

    • David on January 2, 2018 at 8:06 am

That’s the same thing I was wondering. Right before they were supposed to start making people with magazines that held more than 10 rounds to turn them over to be destroyed the NRA stepped in and had a federal court put a hold on that law before it went into effect. I don’t know what’s different this time.

Anyone ever hear of the black market? Countries that have a black market have ridiculous laws liked these.

Moved to Idaho last November. Truly one of the best choices I’ve ever made it seems. It is so strange to live now in what is a free country. Too bad California is not part of it.

This state should leave the union and take care of the fruits and nuts that make these laws.

When your governor states that he admires the communist Ideology, what do you expect?

  7. A.Santos on January 2, 2018 at 7:31 am

What the hell happened to California.I was there in the 1960’s and you could carry a gun open carry.I guess the Liberals and Communist have totally taken California over sad.

The bigger problem we Nebraskans are experiencing is the influx of Californians to our state, who then proceed to bring the tail of socialism, self righteousness and twisted logic with them and to try and turn our state into a subsidiary of what they left.

    • Mike on January 2, 2018 at 12:05 pm

What exactly took place in New Jersey with NY City residents moving into the state and outsiders being transferred into NJ for work, and they brought their Liberal Ideology along with them and now we are all moving into PA..to rid ourselves of the Taxes and the future destruction of another state by Democratic Liberal Socialists. The war against communism / socialism will not be between Russians and Americans as once foretold, but Americans against Americans.

So very true. Liberals need to be prevented from leaving California or New York. Liberal have pretty much destroyed the U.S.

I grew up in California until I was 17 in 1977. Hunting was a big deal. High school parking lots had vehicles with guns in the back windows because you went duck hunting or deer hunting before and after school. The local barber made sure that every teenager who killed a buck on opening weekend of the deer hunt got his/her name in the paper. So in 40 years, California has turned into something that we never would have thought to happen. This should be an eye opener to all of us who live in states that honor our firearms constitutional rights, that it does matter who we elect; because in two generations the people of California have gone from what we have in other states today, to what Californians have today. We need to support those politicians who understand and support the original intent of our constitution, not the flavor of the day.

just look at the Blue controlled states and you will see nothing but problems. Whether it gun control, welfare fruad, etc, does not matter, Blue controlled liberal ideals is the problem in most cases. Here in NM is Blue and the State is falling apart. Crime is running rampant, and the leadership is just aweful. I live in a city where the motto is the “City of Vision”, that is so far from the truth, it is backwards. We have concealed carry which i am, and go nowhere without my gun. but i am sure that these stupid laws of liberal California will slowly melt into my state. Why we give illegals drivers license is beyond me, i mean i do understand, the blue needs those votes. Sorry Cali, feel for you man….

A lot of people don’t realize that California has a new law for the people in government. They do not have to follow the same gun laws and regulations that everyone else must follow. They exempt their self from enforcement of their ridiculous gun legislation. When the government thanks that they are above the citizens they represent it’s time to get them out of office. Perhaps the people of California we’ll finally open their eyes and see what is going on around them. It’s not even just guns now they are officially a sanctuary state. They passed a half a dozen laws to protect illegals and penalize anyone who tries to turn them in or work with the federal government on removing them from the state. And I thought Maryland was bad.

  12. Andre on January 2, 2018 at 8:21 am

I think this is despicable. The Democruts want to totally control the people. It’s not just the guns, it’s everything they can do no matter what that will give them total power over you. California is doomed. Yet, the governors and higher up can have armed body guards so they can keep themselves safe but not it’s citizens.

  14. Joe on January 2, 2018 at 9:25 am

I think that who ever thought this up is an idiot as my partner said you will have more problems now that pot is legal. It is also against the conistution to ban guns you have a right to own gun in the USA .

I live in Washington State, believe me it’s not only California, the whole West Coast is being set up to be just like them. We have the same type of Communists Atheists in Oregon and Washington as that’s running California and other states now. They all want nice things for their illegals, Queers and the regular criminals and sick like minded people but they pass laws that come down hard on the real people of these States that hold’s the Constitution sacred! I remember watching on TV in the late 50s or early 60s, a little bald headed Russian slapping His shoe on a podium at the United Nations conference charging with a threat to the United States that, “We Will Bury You from With In”! Now we see this coming to fruition in just a few years and it will get worse as anyone that has read the Lords Book will know! I believe there will be a total rebellion in this Country and the Democrat Atheists will bring it on, as we can now see that that is happening! Yes it is sad, as our Commander and Chief President Trump says “it’s very Sad”!

When you continue to allow the election of agenda driven morons in your state legislature, you really just get what you deserve. When the people rise up in numbers, they get noticed even in in the midst of the rank corruption of California lawmakers. Whining gets nothing constructive done. Failure of CA residents to sacrifice personal convenience to get these idiots of office is the reason they are still in office.

  17. Rich Hutchins on January 2, 2018 at 12:57 pm

The people of California should wise up and learn from the Election of President Trump. That if you find the right leader; someone with guts, who is fearless and willing to take on all the Social/Liberal Democrats in that state, support that person then work your tails off to get that person elected and then make changes that way. Setting back complaining about what you have allowed to happen to yourselves doesn’t cut it. The Cancer created within that dare I say State, can spread to other states and has already infected Oregon and Washington.

I have a question. I have a CCW in CA and AZ. When I carry, I have 3 magazines loaded and on my person. I am traveling to AZ to see my brother who is ill (I know that doesn’t matter, just stating the reason for my trip). Will I be breaking the new ammunition law by carrying ammo across the state line and then back into CA when I return? If this is a violation, the lawyers at the CRPA and NRA need to get on this post haste… I guess I will be breaking the law when I drive to see my brother who is ill.

    • Jacob Paulsen on January 2, 2018 at 4:35 pm

Steven, I don’t know. I just read the law and there isn’t any obvious exclusion that would allow you to travel out and then back in with that ammo.

    • Just Dan on January 3, 2018 at 8:29 am

      Steve,
Good on you for carrying and being one of the good guys on the road.
My travel philosophy is carry enough gun/ammo to fight my way home to my wife and kids when the SHTF. So, I carry in my pack, the accurate full-size with 10+1, ( yes, chambered and ready) plus a spare mag and a box of 50 rounds. That plus my EDC is 79 rounds on my person or my passenger seat. MANY PEOPLE would tell me that is hardly enough for when the SHTF. Most people in my circles think a trunk gun or two and a lot more ammo would be wise.
As, for crossing the border, no I don’t know what the limit is between possession and transporting, it’s a great question, but it’s similar to not carrying within 1000′ of a school. We all know better than to stop 1000′ from every school zone and make spectical of ourselves standing at our trunks unloading and locking away our weapons so we can travel past. I’d bet most of us, calmly drive past many school zones, abiding by the traffic laws and watching out for our fellow man, while our co-pilot safely remains holstered.
      Two things:
      Carry every day and everywhere.
Remember you are one of the good guys.
