Bakersfield, CA—A Bakersfield woman was attacked by her husband’s cousin in her own home on the morning of June 5th.
According to Knox County Sheriff’s Office a woman, living at a home located near College Avenue and Montello Street with her 5 children, was attacked by 33-year-old Andrew Oldham.
Oldham forced is way into the home through the back door and allegedly attacked the mother with a sledge hammer and wooden chair.
Somehow the woman was able call 911 and get to her gunsafe where she retrieved a firearm. The victim shot Oldham in the lower body, but he was able to reach her and take away her gun and phone.
Soon after, police arrived and took Oldham into custody without incident and treated for his gunshot wound before booking him into Central Receiving Facility.
The woman told detectives that Oldham is her husband’s cousin and was reportedly “… in love with her.”
She went on to say that she had filed a restraining order against Oldham before he broke into her home but had never served him with the order because she didn’t want to cause trouble with her in-laws. Her husband’s family had told her Oldham was “crazy” and was supposed to be on medication
Oldham was charged with first degree burglary, assault with a deadly weapon, willful cruelty to children, false imprisonment with violence, and carrying a deadly weapon. All charges which the Bakersfield man plead not guilty to.
The woman declined medical attention at the scene, and none of her children were injured during the attack.
It’s surprising that the victim was able to get to her gun when it was locked in a safe. In a home with 5 children running around, a safe is very important, but it is also important to be able to quickly access your home defense weapons.
It is also important to note that it is far better to be rude, then to be attacked by a deranged man who thinks he is in love with you.
